This season we have joined forces with Daniel Johnston's friends and family and the Hi, How Are You Project to highlight the topic of mental health by funding and creating thoughtful media, projects and events. We support the organization's mission to eliminate the stigma and shame surrounding mental health, making it easier for people to talk openly about this important area of our lives.To help raise awareness of this issue, we're proud to introduce the Vans x Daniel Johnston Skate Sk8-Hi, featuring iconic cassette tape graphics on a reimagined 283g suede and canvas upper. In his early years, Daniel would hand-decorate individual cassettes and give them away friends and even strangers. The collection's graphic motifs include a checkerboard pattern reminiscent of cassette tapes, as well as Johnston's iconic graphics reflecting raw and audacious illustrations.
Skaters will appreciate the repositioning of reinforced DURACAP™ inserts and a completely redesigned upper, as well as the new two-piece foxing tape that has a deeper knurled pattern on the toe - these elements make the new Skate Sk8-Hi model strong enough to withstand everyday madness on the board. New molded heel counter and internal tongue straps provide greater board control and a better fit. Even the rubber outsole that Vans is famous for has been improved with a SICKSTICK™ rubber blend for improved grip and board feel. Additionally, POPCUSH™ inserts provide energy return, excellent cushioning and impact protection, while also helping to reduce leg fatigue during longer board rides. The whole is complemented by internal heel stiffeners providing additional support and stabilization.
